Portrait mode video.

Yes, I know why. It's Instagram's fault. They were the first popular app that didn't allow for device rotation, and they were the first to pioneer app-first media creation.

And no Tik Tok is carrying that mantle (although they do now allow for "full screen" on videos that are able to scale widescreen).

As a television & film major in college I always bang the drum of landscape photography and video recording. Not taking risks, scripting out my day...

Over the last 10 years, at this point the second decade of my career, a lot has changed. I have taken more risks, tried new things, stepped out of my own comfort zone. I have become more comfortable with uncertainty, more accepting of epic failure as a learning win. And I have tried to instill this in my students and colleagues alike.

In the 8 years since I have been at Heathcote School, I have tried to make "embrace the dumpster fire" a school-wide mantra. That we push limits, try new things, and are comfortable with failing.

Sometimes you need to crash int the brick wall at 1,000 miles an hour to best learn, and understand, how to avoid it next time. Learning is messy and rarely in a straight, clean line. The dumpster fire is the epic fail, the epic fail to figure out how to fail less epically next time, to eventually get that win (epic or otherwise). The dumpster fire is knowing it's ok to not be good, or right, or comfortable the first or second or even third time. The dumpster fire is the start of the process.

Failing is key to learning.
<p class="_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body" style="--font-size: 22px; --line-height: 1.44; font-family: "YACgEdYQidM 0", _fb_, auto; letter-spacing: 0.001em; line-height: 31px;">Learning isn't easy, nor clean, nor instant... sometimes the best way to learn how to do something right is to do it completely wrong the first time. Things work fine one day, and not so fine the next. And often there is no concrete explanation as to why things go wonky.

This is especially true of Chromebooks, but is easily solvable. It is because of an impending update. Google will send out an update to the device, but wait for the user to install it, however, in the meantime that impending update is the cause of the wonkyness…

You should keep your Chromebook up-to-date, and it’s very easy to do so.

If you see a 1 by the clock, that means there is an update available. Click the clock and then click the “Restart to Update” link.

Google sends out updates regularly, and at random times, so any time you see that 1 by the clock, you are welcome to click the “Restart to Update” button.

Think of it as preventative maintenance. A mesh network is a more reliable, stronger home wifi network, and a key asset in 2020.

What is a mesh network?

A mesh network is multiple wifi access points for your home to ensure fewer dead zones, faster connection, and overall better reliability

You mean like a network extender?

No. An extender takes the signal from your modem and extends it out, but at a downgraded level. Think of a ball of dough, pinch a bit and stretch it out. The further you get away from the original mass, the thinner the dough becomes. Same with a wifi extender, yes it will stretch your network range, but as a progressively thinner level.

So how is a mesh network different?

Mesh networks set aside a channel of communication between the access points, that is only for the access points, so the satellite that is far away from the original modem is broadcasting the same strength signal as the original base. No loss of strength.

Are they hard to set up?

Nope. Just plug it in to your existing Verizon/Comcast/etc modem and it's a few steps and you're good to go. Most systems have an app and 3-5 steps to get going, plus you can manage the devices from the app.

But why? If I have crazy fast FIOS, why do I need this thing?

Because your crazy fast FIOS service is being managed by an average piece of hardware. The wifi routers that come for free with service are mediocre at best when it comes to managing traffic. And the further you get from them, physically, the weaker the signal.

But seriously, I have crazy fast FIOS, why do I need this?

Think of your FIOS connection like a smooth, open road, as far as the eye can see. Fast. Your devices are that race-tuned V8 car hungry to tear down the road. Your router is like the like the on-ramp. Specifically a Brooklyn-Queens Expressway type on-ramp. Sometimes closed, sometimes under construction. Pothole filled and a slog to get through. A mesh system is a smoother, more managed on-ramp. In fact, it's like having multiple on-ramps in a system that gets you on the highway fast and smooth.

A real-world example...

I've had a mesh network for years. I moved into a new apartment 1 week before the March 9th Covid lockdown. The apartment had Verizon FIOS. On the first day of remote learning our router got jammed. Only 1 person could be on a Zoom at a time. I dug my mesh system out of the moving box and plugged it in to the Verizon modem, and instantly all four of us could Zoom, watch Netflix, etc.

Why? Because mesh wifi systems do a much better job at managing the data traffic and balancing the signal

So, if last Spring you experienced difficulty with Zoom, slow connections, inability to connect, and so forth, it wasn't Google, or the Chromebook, or Zoom. It was most likely the generic wifi router getting jammed with data.

What do I actually know about mesh systems?

I have the Netgear Orbi RBK 50. This summer I installed the Netgear RBK 753 system for an Inn in Maine. The Inn is in the western Maine mountains and only has a DSL connection. After installing the RBK 753 device connections speeds were faster, more people could be on the Inn's wifi without it jamming, and we didn't nee to reboot the router anymore. All we did was plug it in to the DSL modem and configure the Orbi name. That's it. Took us less than 1 hour to set up.

Mesh network options are:

Netgear Orbi

Linksys Velop

Google Nest Wifi

Points of note

First point of note, if you buy one of these, don't unplug your VerizonComcast/etc modem/router. Those power your tv's on-screen channel guide. Just plug the mesh system into your existing hardware, give the mesh system a new name, and then move your devices over to it. It takes about an hour to do it all from opening the box to adding the new network to your devices, but you'll be amazed at the difference.

Second point of note, the apps that you use to set these systems up are free ad awesome. With my Orbi I can see every device connected to my network and I can turn off an individual device's access with a single tap. That isn't possible right now.

So, lately, the solution has been to give students the PDFs, have them print at home, work on them, then take a picture of the finished sheet, or scan it, and send it back to the teacher...

... that is laborious and has many spots for failure along the way.

So, how do we use PDF worksheets in a paperless environment? Make the PDFs into Google Slides files so the students can add annotations like arrow, lines and shapes, as well as type answers directly onto the pages. shapes, text boxes. By doing this you can turn your PDF inso a Slides file, share it with students, and they can fill it out directly in the Slides file which you already have access too! I originally wrote this for my class blog @HeathcoteTech. After receiving multiple emails from parents with personal device/Chromebook questions I figured I'd turn my email replies into a more structured "buyers guide" of sorts. The thoughts and opinions in this post are my own and crafted with 2nd-5th graders in mind, as that is the population I teach. This is in no way meant to be a comprehensive list of the "best" Chromebooks on the market.

This is the second annual Chromebook Buyers Guide. Chromebooks are great devices for elementary school students and beyond. There are lots of options and hopefully this guide will give you a sense of why go Chromebook and which models(s) to check out. Enjoy...

As the years have progressed there has been an ever increasing interest from parents to purchase Chromebooks for home use. Awesome!
I think it's an excellent idea and a great investment, we use them every day at school and I have four in my home.
Before I get into some device specifics I want to touch on a few common points of interest from parents...

Yes, Chromebooks are fully functional and very robust computing devices

Yes, they do require a wifi connection to work (although they do have some offline capabilities) but in 2019 I have two things to say to that

a 2-5th grader is most likely using this device at home, or another location, where there is wifi

if they are in a place without wifi it is probably best to go outside and enjoy the lack of wifi

Why are they so cheap? Well, relatively inexpensive is a better description...

You can spend $1,000 on a Chromebook, but you can also spend $150 on one; as with any machine the cost differential is due to items like screen quality, physical weight, touch vs non touch screens, etc.

The biggest price difference between a Chromebook and a Mac or Windows machine is the operating system license. A Chromebook runs on Chrome, which doesn't cost anything. Microsoft charges laptop makers a license fee for installing windows on their hardware, and that fee gets passed on to the consumer.

How long do they last? Officially? 3 years. Realistically? 6-7.

When Chromebooks were first released you could only purchase them from Google, and Google had them on a 3-year life cycle, meaning after 3 years Google wouldn't service or support them and expected you to get a new one. That has changed dramatically over the years. Now that many vendors make Chromebooks the quality has gone up, immensely. I bought my mother-in-law a Chromebook 9 years ago. It lasted her 8 years, she only upgraded during Christmas 2018 because the deal was so good. It is her only computer and she uses it daily. A Chromebook in the hands of an elementary age student should last 3 years at the minimum and closer to 5 on the high end.

Touch screen? Detachable screen? Flip screen? For the most part, no.

In my opinion the tool and app availability for Chromebooks, to take full advantage of touch and tablet features, just isn't there yet. In Scarsdale we look at those features every year when we evaluate the 3rd grade Chromebook purchase. We have yet to go that route not because the devices aren't solid but rather there is a lack of apps and tools that require, or take advantage of, those features. Maybe next year...

However, for the home user, there are a few very solid options that are flip but also less than $300. The Lenovo Flex 11, for instance, is a situation where the device is solid, and economical, enough without the flip, so the flip is just a bonus.

Don't spend a lot on a Chromebook for an elementary-age student.

Yes, you can go $1,000, but why? My feeling is $300-500 is a range with a lot of very solid devices that will last a few years.

In fact, there are a lot of very solid options in the $279 range.

Spending less than $400 or $500 eases any potential upgrading in a few years, or adding something like an iPad to the mix (my personal feeling is an iPad and a Chromebook is the best power-computing combination for $1,000).

At school

In Scarsdale we use Dell Chromebooks. Right now Dell has discounted their 3100 model (last Christmas they discounted models up to 65% so if it's not urgent, check the Dell site in December).

The 3rd grade uses 3100 (non-touch)

The 4th grade uses the 5190 (non-touch)

The 5th grade use the 3180

I am using a 5190 2-in-1 touch-screen model as a test machine

initial thoughts are:

it's heavy

awkward as a tablet

touch is nice when in laptop mode

I wouldn't consider it an iPad replacement, not at all close

At home I have 4 Chromebooks; two Dell Chromebook 11 3180, one Toshiba Chromebook 2 and one Asus 302C. The Dell I bought, for my children, is the same model our 5th graders currently use. The Toshiba was my wife's and is now 5+ years old so last Christmas I got her the Asus and I use the Toshiba. All four are going strong and are well suited to everyones needs.

So, with all of that, it boils down to...

If I were buying for my children right now I'd decide between

Dell 3100 series

if the Dell speaks to you, wait a bit. On 11/15 they had 35% discounts, but I've seen them get discounted as high as 65% after Thanksgiving

Samsung Chromebook 3

Lenovo C330

If I were buying for myself I'd decide between

Asus C434

the step up from the model my wife has

Asus C302CA

the updated version of the 302C my wife has

Acer Chromebook 15

A thing to keep in mind

Don't be swayed by extremely low prices on clearance at store like Best Buy. I love Best Buy but generally their clearance models are years-old overstock. This Dell 3181 for instance, is a great deal at $189, however that model is at least 3 years old, and depending on manufacture date it might be 4 years old. It's a good machine, the 5th graders have been using it since 3rd grade. However, the brand new 3100 series are currently at $249 (yes, it's $60 more so not a small number, but $60 to jump to a brand new model is a serious consideration) and those prices are likely to drop a little more. So while the $189 is definitely a great deal on the surface, it's not a solid a deal when compared to brand new machines, like the $229 Samsung 3 I recommend above.

Final thoughts

Chromebooks are awesome

Don't spend more than $300 for a student device

At the top end, I wouldn't spend more than $600

yes, you can pay $1,000 for a Chromebook, but why would you...

Touch is fine but not required - a touch Chromebook is not an iPad

but if you really want touch, the Lenovo C330 is good at $279 and the Asus C434 is top notch at $540

I hope this post guides your purchasing decision.
One of the biggest, literally, things in edtech is the interactive whiteboard. Smartboards, Promethean, there are a few manufacturers.

My district uses Smartboards. I'm not a fan. This post isn't a rant on why I don't like them, the purpose of this post is to outline an alternative, but to give some context, here is why I'm not a fan, and never have been, of interactive whiteboards...

they are expensive. $3k+ is a lot to spend on a single item

they are a central focal point... but classes should be flexible and fluid, a large fixed object like an interactive white board take up a lot of classroom real estate and are only used a small portion of the day

most users only use a fraction of capabilities

that may be due to lack of training, or that those features are bells and whistles and don't fit seamlessly into a teacher's workflow.. either way it's an issue

they only do one thing

ok, so not literally one thing, but a large, fixed object, no matter how "flexible" or "versatile" it's still a piece of furniture

So, what's the alternative?

My feeling is the money spend on this large, fixed object can be better spent on a toolkit of resources that provide the virtually the same features as the interactive whiteboards but also provide far more true flexibility and versatility.

So, here is my pitch... Instead of buying a $3,995 SMART 6000 series board, plus a $300 stand, for a total of $4,300, spend less money and get more.

Here is my spec sheet for an interactive whiteboard alternative...
For less than 1 SMART 6000 you can get teachers a new display, a new laptop, and a new iPad Pro. Plus an actual whiteboard.

With this alternative you also take away the big, expensive piece of furniture in the front of the classroom. Sure, there is still a display there, an awesome 4K display, but now it's not something teachers will feel obliged to use because of the investment in it.

And of course, you don’t need to go with the iPad Pro and not every teacher needs a new MacBookAir, so the $3,786.93 number is a pretty high-end look at the situation. You could also swap the MacBook Air for a high end $500 Chromebook and you're down another $800. Don't need an iPad Pro? Save $500 on a mid level Air.

If you don't need to purchase teacher laptops or tablets use the finds elsewhere. By saving the money on the display you have many options for redistributing the remaining funds. Teacher devices, student devices, more classrooms upgraded, the list goes on,

$4,000+ is a lot to invest on a single item for a single room. There are alternative, my outline above is just one of many possibilities.

So, if you're thinking about dropping over $4,000 on a single interactive whiteboard, think about that same $4,000 buying a display and multiple other computing devices, with money left over.

Just some things to consider...

I had the pleasure of attending their fall conference this year and it was a blast.

Maine is doing some great things with technology, with state support and the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI)...

<span style="color: #141414; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , sans-serif;">In 2002, Maine became the first state to provide a personal portable computer device to each 7th and 8th grade student and teacher, along with the software, wireless networks, technical support, and professional development needed to effectively use the technology for teaching and learning. Read more about the groundbreaking MLTI program on the History page.

<span style="color: #141414; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #141414; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , sans-serif;">The program has changed somewhat over the years, but the goal remains the same: to provide State support for access to technology-enhanced educational experiences for all students. In the 2018-19 school year, the State will be helping over 300 schools obtain educational technology and the professional learning necessary to take advantages of all that technology offers.

The conference had the usual slate of featured keynotes and breakout sessions. What I found so valuable was for the relative small size of the conference (a few hundred attendees) the quality of the presentations, and skill/knowledge of the presenters, was amazing.

What impressed me most was the quality of sessions. I sat in a session about Apple School Manager that was run by two Apple Engineers. Apple is heavily supporting MLTI and their engineers were helping individuals in the room with their specific needs. The benefit of a smaller conference with such state support was this amazing amount of one-on-one attending from highly qualified speakers. As a non-Mainer the Apple engineers couldn't help me to the same level as the Maine attendees but they were great about answering my questions and connecting me with local engineers in my area.

Apple had quite a few sessions over the two days. Each led by an Apple trainer or engineer. A lot of conferences have Apple-themed sessions led by teachers who use Apple products. And those can be great. The difference with ACTEM was with Apple running sessions about Apple products, the knowledge shared was unparalleled. Keyframe animation in iMovie was great, as was making gifs in Keynote.

I also sat in a session about Google Tour Creator and Expeditions. Let by two Maine educators who happen to be Google Innovators and Certified Instructors. They had a full Expeditions kit and about 10 of us in the session. Again, the depth of knowledge and experience of the presenters paired with the small number of attendees meant the session was very detailed, hands-on, and could be tailored to each attendees need at any point.

I drove the 5:30 minutes to Augusta for this conference because I wanted to experience what the State of Maine had to offer from an edtech standpoint. I'd heard about the MLTI program for years but I wanted to see it first hand. Plus, I love Maine, my wife is from Maine, I spend about 5 weeks a year in Maine for fun, so why not see the other side of what the state has to offer, and spend a few days learning.

I also think it's a great opportunity to get out of the NYC-area and learn about what other educators are doing. I love where I teach but I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that sometimes where you live and work, and the local events you go to, become a bit of an echo chamber. I wanted to get away from my local echo chamber and learn differently. I also wanted to share what I have been doing and get feedback from a new audience.

I presented two sessions and did an Ignite talk about teaching with Ignites. The presentations and Ignite video are below...
This piece originally appeared on my @HeathcoteTech class blog

At the start of the 2018-2019 school I wrote the first blog post regarding student headphones. This edition is essentially the same, has the same rational and overview with updated links. Headphones for children don't change as frequently as high-end adult models, so this post is almost identical to last year's post, with updated links.

I often get asked about headphones for students. It’s a difficult question to answer on many fronts. Price is one concern, but so is durability. A microphone is an important consideration since students use apps like Seesaw to record their learning. And their age. A kindergartner has different needs than a 5th grader in terms of size, fit, and functionality.

Here is a breakdown of how I approach the K-5 headphone question…

Things to consider:

Price

don’t want to spend a lot, the headphones are most likely getting heavy, less than gentle, use and they’re living in the classroom, not a quiet spot at home

don’t want to spend too little, cheap headphones are exactly that, cheap. Liable to break more easily, requiring additional purchases, poor sound quality, bad fit, etc

Spending too much is a waste waiting to happen, and spending too little is throwing good money after bad

I think $20 is the maximum that should be spent on a pair of headphones that live at school. Int he $15-20 range there are quite a few high quality headphones that will be a much better investment that 5 pair of $5 ones.

Design

over-the-ear are the best, especially in K-3. And they’re not a bad idea in 4th and 5th

by 5th grade I feel a student can make their own headphone choice however, I would keep it to the same $20 limit or the traditional ear buds (the original Apple ones, not the Air Pods)

in-ear/ear bud style aren’t generally sized for children meaning they are a poor fit and don’t always stay in place

an in-line mic is an excellent option to have, it adds functionality and in school a mic is something we use quite frequently. Having it on the headphones makes everything more efficient and sound better

a boom mic is not recommended as they are more susceptible to breaking

headphones designed for kids can be simply small and colorful, or, more importantly, they can have a much more valuable feature; a decibel limiter

a set of headphones with a decibel limiter means no matter how high the volume on the device is set, the headphones peak at a safe level to limit potentially ear damaging volume

Here are a few options that are highly recommended by a variety of sites I trust:

JLab JBuddies Studio

review on Wirecutter

microphone and decibel limiting

LilGadgets Connect +

$19.95

review on NY Mag

Amazon link

microphone and decibel limiting

JLab Audio Neon

$15.95

Amazon Link

microphone but no decibel limiting

Ausdom

$14.99 – $16.99 depending on color

Amazon link

Amazon Choice item

microphone but no decibel limiting

So, there are 4 options to choose from. $20 isn’t a small investment, however I do believe that an investment in one of those 4 will prove to be a more reliable and durable purchase than a pair or $5 headphones. Jumping from $5 to $20 gives more functionality, reliability and durability. And the ones that are decibel limiting and have a microphone on them are the most bang for the buck.
For my own children, a 2nd and 4th grader, I bought the Ausdom headphones. Why those? Because I thought it was a good idea to show a 6 and 8 year old the choices and they chose based on look and color. However, the Ausdom were in my top 5 when the choice was made, so it wasn’t out or left field. And I do like them. I’m happy with the purchase and they are at school with my kids.

I hope that assists in your search for a pair of headphones for your child.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11803641778139972064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-26396870387169331322019-07-15T12:20:00.001-04:002019-07-15T12:20:13.343-04:00CapCon! 2019 is in the books

The first day of summer vacation. But it was also #Basecamp2019 hosted by Chappaqua Schools!

It was a great way to end the school year and kick off summer; reconnecting with colleagues and friends, meeting new ones, sharing, learning... it was a great finish to the year and a perfect way to start the summer.

One of my favorite moments of the day was the Symposium Session run by Daniel Valentin and Valerie Brunow. They created a NCAA-style bracket challenge around poetry and crowning a "best poem." It was great to look at something like poetry in that way, since poetry isn't something you can easily say is best or worst, especially across different genres and the different ways to experience it (reading it, having it read to you, or watching a video of the poet read the poem as they intended).

It was a great session that got me thinking differently about poetry as well as how I might have some fun with a tech-focused bracket challenge.

In addition to watching a number of sessions, I presented a few things during the conference and this blog posts will serve as the central repository for all the things I rambled on about.

And a big thanks for Ellen Moskowitz for capturing my finest summer shirt during my Adobe Spark roundtable discussion
This year we did it with the entire grade.

Before we dive into the awesomeness that is the 4th grade Ignites allow me to define Ignite Talks and how we use them…

Ignite Talks originated in Seattle as a new style of presenting. The format is: “5 minutes, 20 slides, auto-advancing every 15 seconds… enlighten us but make it quick.”

We have modified that format for 4th grades;

“7 slides, 15 seconds per slide, 1:45 to tell us your story.” For the 4th grade we took the social studies unit The American Revolution and centered the Ignite Talks around that idea and area of study.

Last year the Ignites were a reflective presentation on their Colonial America unit of study. This year their Ignites are all about their study of the American Revolution. Their unit of study around the American Revolution was a 6+ weeks history experience. They researched, read novels, created period-inspired political cartoons and diary entries, and looked at the major factors, from both sides, of the start of the American Revolutionary Way. Their Ignite Talks are a summary of their experience. We gave them 7 slides and 1:45 to tell about their learning experience, in their own words. It is the ultimate reflective assignment, they had to look back at the full experience and think about the different assignments and projects and how they connected, or didn’t, with each. These Ignites are their literal final project for this unit, summing up everything they did, learned, experienced, and how they felt about it all. All in one minute and 45 seconds…

It was a very difficult assignment, difficult on purpose. The Ignite Talk is very involved; from research to narrative writing, turning the narrative writing into a script, making sure the script sounds natural and in the proper voice and tense, memorizing the script and editing for time, creating simple and clean slide with period appropriate images, and finally rehearsing with the final scrip and slides using Google Slides auto-advance feature.

The students were amazing. It was a challenge, a very difficult task. The various steps, the precise timing, and specter of standing in front of an audience to give the talk… but it was that process that makes their final talks so impressive. The angst and anxiety moved toward confidence, the butterflies led to bravery, we were never ready until we had no choice but to be ready. And they rocked it. To see their videos, the smiles on their faces, the inflection in their voices, their enthusiasm. They knocked it out of the park. We recorded the talks in the lab in front of a standing-room only crowd of parents. So while the video and audio quality might not be the sharpest, just watching these 4th grades stand there and tell their stories with confidence is worth every step of the process.

It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t supposed to be. These 4th graders conquered the crazy assignment put in front of them. And the looks on their faces, to see them realize they could do it, they could conquer what scared them and they could rise to the challenge, is priceless. This project is less about the content and the format and more about the process and the confidence, the fact that they realize they can do anything, even the things that scare them the most.

All of the students gave their Ignite Talks in front of their peers and a room full of parents. Their work can be seen on YouTube using the links below

Adobe Spark is a great platform we've been experimenting with this year. Adobe Spark has a few great benefits including being cloud based so students can use any connected device and access their work anywhere, and it gives you 3 options; Spark Post, Spark Page, and Spark Video. We used Spark Post earlier this year to create poetry graphics.

For the 3rd grade Cultural Universal and 5th grade Immigration units we used Spark Video.
For each grade the students had some basic guidelines

No more than 6 words per slide

No more than 6 seconds of narration per slide

Choose music that fits the tone of your story/narrative

Choose a theme and color scheme that fits the tone of your story/narrative

The goal of using Adobe Spark Video was to get students to think differently about their presentation. They are adept at Google Slides and very competent at WeVideo. Adobe Spark falls somewhere in between and posed them challenges to figure out; challenges in what they wanted it to do or be like WeVideo while also showing them the possibilities beyond Google Slides.

For both the 3rd and 5th graders they wrote their narratives first, then turned those into a script, which became the narration and the visuals. There was lots of editing, revising, practicing, fine tuning, and ultimately amazing final projects.

Recently we introduced 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to the Adobe Express (formerly Spark) platform of creative apps.

Adobe Spark Post is used when creating graphics such as flyers, posters, infographics, and so on.

Adobe Spark Page is for creating scrolling multimedia web pages.

Adobe Spark Video is a visual storytelling platform that adds simple animations, music, and narration to slides of text and images.

For the Art and Poetry Festival some 3rd and 4th grade classes used Adobe Spark Post to create and publish their poetry. Here are their final products…
During the March 25, 2019 Scarsdale Board of Education meeting the updated Technology Plan was presented by the Jerry Crisci, the Scarsdale Schools Director of Instructional Technology and Innovation/Co-Director, The Center for Innovation.

As part of the presentation computer teachers and librarians from all grade levels showcased a sampling of what students are using, making and creating.

For the elementary technology team, we created a Periodic Tale of Apps. Elementary students in Scarsdale do a wide variety of things with technology; storytelling, creating, coding, designing... just too many things to only list one or two. This Periodic Table of Apps was designed to give the members of the board and the community members in attendance a better sense of all the great things happening at the elementary level.

EdTechTeacher always puts on a great conference. This year Dr. Ayana Howard kicks off the 2-days of learning with a great keynote about STEM education and the future of robotics in education.

My colleague, Christine Boyer, and I are at the #ettsummit to share some things we've done, but more importantly to get feedback on our process as well as gather new ideas and different ways of approaching things.

It's always important to get out of our own echo chamber and see the awesome going on in the world outside out own building and district.

During the summit I am presenting on storytelling and movie making, from paper to YouTube. Christine and I are also doing a joint session on student presentations beyond tri-fold boards. Christine did a session on blogging and an Ignite about Makerspaces.

The slide decks for all of these sessions are below...

As the years have progressed there has been an ever increasing interest from parents to purchase Chromebooks for home use. Awesome!

I think it's an excellent idea and a great investment, we use them every day at school and I have three at my home.

Before I get into some device specifics I want to touch on a few common points of interest from parents...

Yes, Chromebooks are fully functional and very robust computing devices

Yes, they do require a wifi connection to work (although they do have some offline capabilities) but in 2018 I have two things to say to that

a 2-5th grader is most likely using this device at home, or another location, where there is wifi

if they are in a place without wifi it is probably best to go outside and enjoy the lack of wifi

When Chromebooks were first released you could only purchase them from Google and Google had them on a 3-year life cycle, meaning after 3 years Google wouldn't service or support them and expected you to get a new one. That has changed dramatically over the years. Now that many vendors make Chromebooks the quality has gone up, immensely. I bought my mother-in-law a Chromebook 8 years ago. She's still using it. It is her only computer and she uses it daily. A Chromebook in the hands of a elementary age student should last 3 years at the minimum and closer to 5 on the high end.

Right now Dell has discounted their 3180 model (last Christmas they discounted models up to 65% so if it's not urgent, check the Dell site in December).

The 3rd grade uses the 5190 (non-touch)

The 4th and 5th grade use the 3180

I am using a 5190 2-in-1 touch-screen model as a test machine

initial thoughts are:

it's heavy

awkward as a tablet

touch is nice when in laptop mode

I wouldn't consider it an iPad replacement, not at all close

At home I have two Dell Chromebook 11 3180 and one Toshiba Chromebook 2. The Dell I bought, for my children, is the same model our 4th and 5th graders currently use.

Final thoughts

Chromebooks are awesome

Don't spend more than $300 for a student device

Touch is fine but not required - a touch Chromebook is not an iPad

I hope this post guides your purchasing decision.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11803641778139972064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-49060346128612921172018-10-11T15:30:00.000-04:002018-10-11T15:30:18.803-04:00Student headphones: an overview and some recommendationsI often get asked about headphones for students. It's a difficult question to answer on many fronts. Price is one concern, but so is durability. A microphone is an important consideration since students use apps like Seesaw to record their learning. And their age. A kindergartner has different needs than a 5th grader in terms of size, fit, and functionality.

Here is a breakdown of how I approach the K-5 headphone question...

Things to consider:

Price

don't want to spend a lot, the headphones are most likely getting heavy, less than gentle, use and they're living in the classroom, not a quiet spot at home

don't want to spend too little, cheap headphones are exactly that, cheap.

And they're not a bad idea in 4th and 5th

by 5th grade I feel a student can make their own headphone choice however, I would keep it to the same $20 limit or the traditional ear buds (the original Apple ones, not the Air Pods)

in-ear/ear bud style aren't generally sized for children meaning they are a poor fit and don't always stay in place

an in-line mic is an excellent option to have, it adds functionality and in school a mic is something we use quite frequently.

For my own children, a 1st and 3rd grader, I have bought the Ausdom headphones. Why those? Because I thought it was a good idea to show a 6 and 8 year old the choices and they chose based on look and color. However, the Ausdom were in my top 5 when the choice was made, so it wasn't out or left field. And I do like them. I'm happy with the purchase and they are at school with my kids.

I think I'll be also purchasing a pair of the JLab JBuddies Studio or LilGadgets Connect+ for home use as a way to test a variety of options.

So, there are 5 options to choose from. $20 isn't a small investment, however I do believe that an investment in one of those 5 will prove to be a more reliable and durable purchase than a pair or $5 headphones. Jumping from $5 to $20 gives more functionality, reliability and durability. And the ones that are decibel limiting and have a microphone on them are the most bang for the buck.

I hope that assists in your search for a pair of headphones for your child.
This year we tried something different, we decided to try the Ignite format with 4th graders.
The Ignite Talks format is something we've done with 5th graders for a few years as part of the CapCon! capstone learning conference and this year we thought we'd roll it down to 4th grade.

So, what is an Ignite?

Ignite Talks originated in Seattle as a new style of presenting. The format is: “5 minutes, 20 slides, auto-advancing every 15 seconds… enlighten us but make it quick.”

We have modified that format for 4th grades; “7 slides, 15 seconds per slide, 1:45 to tell us your story.” For the first time trying this format with 4th grade we took the social studies unit Colonial America and centered the Ignite Talks around that idea and area of study.

Students wrote scripts about their experiences during the unit and tuned those scripts into a 1:45 talk about their learning. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't supposed to be. It took a lot of editing, revising, practicing, peer-feedback, and on and on, but they knocked it out of the park.
The students were amazing! Can't wait to see them rock CapCon! 2019 as 5th graders.Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11803641778139972064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-62763616567683600922018-06-21T14:22:00.002-04:002018-06-21T14:22:34.182-04:00CapCon! 2018 - a capstone learning conferenceEvery year the 5th graders of Scarsdale participate in Capstone. Capstone is the last two months of school, post-standardized testing. Students choose a topic, research it, and create a final product. It is designed to be a self-directed, passion/interest based assignment. And it used to end with a tri-fold board... But not any more...

Once again the 5th graders were amazing and rocked the CapCon! Capstone event.

CapCon! a capstone learning conference is our yearly 5th grade culminating activity. For years it was a traditional tri-fold museum, but we just wrapped up the 3rd year of the switch from tri-fold Capstone to CapCon! which is all about student voice and presentations; TED and Ignite style...
I have written about the previous years events (2016 and 2017) and not much as changed from a structural/formula standpoint, the kids projects, however, are always new, unique, personal, and impressive.

The students documented the process on their own blogs. The blogs can be accessed via the classroom teacher's blogs (look for the "My class" menu on the sidebar).
