I very much appreciate it.

I think a big takeaway from this is an event that invites "100 Connected Educators" should anticipate some spirited online discussion later. And educators will nitpick presentation flaws. We grade, it's what we do...

I think the Bammy folks are handling the criticisms with aplomb.

I hope the event continues and learns & grows to improve year in and year out.

Thanks again for the kind words & taking the time to commentChrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11803641778139972064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-63155338128170824582013-09-24T22:50:40.225-04:002013-09-24T22:50:40.225-04:00Great post, Chris. As we try to imagine the future, let us talk honestly about what is happening. Sounds like some pretty valid observations.
Michelle Cordyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02175381912846501649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-34708688253818518852013-09-24T12:22:35.462-04:002013-09-24T12:22:35.462-04:00Thanks for the reply.

How my wife interpreted the situation is what matters, and I believe what she said (which she reluctantly told me, after the event, not wanting to hurt my feelings).

Maybe it was a miscommunication, these things happen, but it was something that happened and it struck my wife negatively so I mentioned it in the post.

And please don't misconstrue my post. I had a lot of fun being there, I was honored to be nominated. I think the concept & spirit of the event has great potential & merit. I just think, as someone with a lot of live event experience, things could have gone smoother. I hope the Bammys continue, and learn & grow from each year's experience.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment (and I did get your email too, thank you).

ThanksChrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11803641778139972064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-56569708910119918412013-09-23T20:33:19.886-04:002013-09-23T20:33:19.886-04:00RE: •have some tact - When we arrived, we got in t...RE: •have some tact - When we arrived, we got in the "red carpet" line. I had to use the restroom so I stepped aside and my wife waited. A woman with a clipboard approached her and said, "We have to get started, what's your name?" My wife said "I'm just a guest, my husband is in the restroom." The woman asked my name and upon hearing it, looked at her clipboard and said to my wife, "Oh, never mind, he's not someone I need a picture of, you can just go straight to your seats," and then walked away. My wife was a bit taken aback to say the least.
I never respond to these, as you can tell by my post, as all of a sudden the posts spiral. So here it goes anyway.
If it were a part of our staff, this was obviously a misheard statement. I was the only one with papers at the red carpet, and I assure you I never ever said those words; first of all there is no protocal for pictures so those words would not have even occurred. Second, I tend to be overly kind to a default, so tact or lack of would not have occurred either. The only thing that might have been said, is since you were not a presenter you did not need to go to the presenters table. Perhaps that was not communicated clearly. And at the end we had to wrap up because the program was starting and I said that pictures will need to be taken aftewards. Hopefully you'll read my post with that possibility in mind. That's just not my style.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-83370667231480400442013-09-23T13:00:57.870-04:002013-09-23T13:00:57.870-04:00Paula,
Thanks for the comment.
Your suggestions a...Paula,
Thanks for the comment.

Your suggestions are great. Showcase some classroom videos, student work, real artifacts of what actually is great in education.

And I agree with your last section. I too felt, and still feel, honored to have been invited and to have had such support from the folks I work with and the families I interact with. It was a fun weekend away, and a great chance to meet people (although, unfortunately, not enough time to meet everyone). I just had higher hopes than were realized I suppose...

Thanks again for the comment, I appreciate it!Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11803641778139972064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954619058536403245.post-89750911289899301442013-09-23T00:02:02.881-04:002013-09-23T00:02:02.881-04:00Chris,
Thank you for your Bammy reflection. I lo...Chris,

Thank you for your Bammy reflection. I love your first four points. I and many others in attendance are in total agreement with you about them. I was shocked to read about the lack of "tact" that you wife had to endure. I applaud your final point and had never stopped to consider it, but having heard it from you definitely love the idea.

So much time was wasted on things that didn't seem to fit with the theme of the evening and then so many of the "winners" were glossed over. It makes one wonder about the hidden agenda the Academy of Arts and Sciences may be supporitng.

Imagine having a video of students talking about their most inspiring teacher instead of a comedian taking cheap shots at education for the sake of laughs. Imagine showcasing some inspiring projects teachers have had their students do instead of the Obama spoof video we had to endure.

I am truly honored to be invited to represent fellow educators as part of the BAM100, but I want to walk away from the Bammys feeling truly inspired instead of somewhat embarassed.
